Bright Lights in Community Energy

A handful of communities received awards from the Community Energy Association at last month’s Union of British Columbian Municipalities conference in Vancouver, BC. Among the award recipients are some of the brightest lights in climate action in the province of BC.

The Municipality of North Cowichan received recognition for its innovative University Village Local Area Plan, a planning exercise that brought together multiple stakeholders, including the City of Duncan, Cowichan Tribes, School District 79 and Vancouver Island University to develop a vision and implementation plan for an energy efficient neighbourhood surrounding the VIU Cowichan campus.

Prince George was recognized for its LEED RCMP facility, which was designed to reduce energy use by 64% using solar energy, biofuels and waste heat for heating and an aquifer for geoexchange cooling. It is projected that the facility will reduce GHG emissions by 235 tonnes per year.

Congratulations to the award recipients and honourable mentions!
