The words “Arctic” and “warm” have been placed beside one another for so long now, that it becomes more and more difficult to really understand the devastation rising global temperatures are inflicting on one of the world’s most delicate ecosystems. According to studies done over the last year, the average air temperature in the arctic rose 1.3 degrees Celsius above the average, the highest jump since recordings began in 1900. Globally, animal populations remain at risk, a problem which is compounding year after year, and sea levels continue to rise. What should always be acknowledged alongside the focus on melting ice and animal populations, is the threat to the livelihood of Arctic communities, and the very real issues unchecked rising temperatures bring with them. Much like island nations in the pacific, northern populations are going to be the first hit with devastating, life changing consequences of uncontrolled climate change.
