England is certainly not known for its great wine. However climate change could see England rival France as one of the world's great wine producers. Climate scientist Antonio Busalacchi from the University of Maryland is reporting in LiveScience that several wine-makers in the Champagne region are already starting to consider relocating to southern England as France is starting to experience a shortened grape growing season. Busalacchi predicts that climate change will cause countries situated at higher latitudes, higher altitudes, or surrounded by ocean to experience the type of longer growing season favoured by grapes (Busalacchi names the Rhine region in Germany, Oregon, and parts of Argentina and New Zealand as beneficiaries). In contrast, wine-growing regions in countries like France, South Africa, and Australia will suffer increased adverse weather events in addition to a shortened growing season, which will at worst destroy the grape vines entirely or at best alter the unique flavour and character of the grapes.
